Updated April 2012
Fossil walrus ivory . 1.5 pounds. 6 inches long x 3 inches wide x 1 ¼ thick. Solid black probably all the way through hints of lighter colors solid heavy very mineralized very ancient. Ends uneven but no cracks. Might work for pistol grips. $300
Fossil walrus ivory 6 .6 ounces. 4 ¼ inches x an oblong 2x1. Nice knife handle shape and feel. Could be split for scales if desired, or left for hidden tang. Surface has tiny natural pits (kind of like how oosik or sea cow looks). I filled them in and do not know if this repeats below the surface, thinking it should not looking at end view. This look may or may not interfere with the over all look of finished product. Otherwise nice and solid no cracks. $120. $20 was deducted due to the pits.
Two fossil walrus ivory pieces
#4 is 7 inches long x 1 ¼ wide x 1 wide at widest and 1/2 wide the narrow direction, and weighs 4.8 ounces This might make 2 short hidden tang handles or would be good to cut up for guards pommels spacers. $125
This is the biggest piece from the tusk at 1 pound 5.5 ounces. It is 5 inches long x 3 inches wide x 1 ¼ thick. Considered a huge chunk. For now anyhow I offer it not cut any smaller for those who want to cut it as they wish. This might get cut into who knows how many scales maybe 5-6 sets. Or could be turned on a lathe for hidden tang handles, or used for pistol grips or (?) I can always decide to cut it smaller later if no one is interested in this large amount. I do get inquires from people sorry I cut something up.. If I cut it up I get more money for the total weight then selling it as it is. Refer to fossil ivory chunk 1 lb 5.5 ounces 1011 (the date so I know you did not find something I forgot to take down 5 years ago).
$387
. Yup might sound like a lot , it's under $300 a pound. I have seen scales made from such material a few ounces selling for over $700 a pound by weight. Yup I'm as upset as you that the price of this material is going through the roof. I'm as bummed out as you are. Oh well. It's rare it's harder to find, sources are drying up etc etc. Again if I cant sell it I'll cut it up and get the $600 a pound price. I just do not have time right now. Got too much material in general coming in right now to deal with. Starting to stockpile inventory to take to the Tucson fossil show.
Fossil walrus ivory tusk 7.1 ounces. This is 6 inches long x 1 ½ across at the base Feels comfortable kin the hand as hidden tang handle. Deep rich colors Will take a high polish. No cracks and very solid. The thick end is jagged. I left it natural as is and it can be trimmed to suit the needs An inch could be trimmed and it is still 5 inches of knife handle.
$130

Example- a relative is a knife maker and you have no idea what they might be able to use. Or let a lady in your life pick out a piece of jewelry.
Fossil walrus ivory tusk tip 2.7 ounces. 4 ½ inches long x 1 inch across at the base. Fits in the hand well as a knife handle - small fixed blade hunter skinner kitchen knife.
