Above steps in the steel of the knife. An old crosscut saw is a favorite
Above etching in blades is done with acid. The black is the 'resist' wax where the acid wilt not touch the steel , scratching through exposes the steel so acid can cut it.
Right I cast my own brass guards from my own designs. (and sell just the guards too) Cast from scrap metals, here is brass from our  local barge yard, an old propeller and ship bearing. Copper is old water pipes when they were solid copper. (new pipes have addatives making to much slag!)
Left and right fossil mammoth tooth left sliced as scales set. I think it's in the shop cart on my 'newest just in' page.

Sometimes I have blank blades I can show you to suit your needs. These are some hunter styles. #1-2 are 01 steel. Will keep an edge well but might be a little brittle for rough use. #3-4 are L6 steel from an 1800's crosscut saw bade and will need sharpening more often then the 01 but are about indestructible. I have  beat on them with a hammer to cut bolts. Once you pick a design and need I can acid etch a design of your choice and you can pick out handle material from
my choices of  materials. Can take 6 months to complete a special order and cost $300 to $500 but the finished product will be an heirloom and hold up in the field.
